The last few weeks has seen the hanging, opening and exhibition of a joint show "Big up Close" - the work of myself and Matt Baldwin - at Watt Space Gallery, Newcastle, NSW. Matt is an illustrator and graphic designer currently going through the BFA at Newcastle University with me. In fact, Matt and I are amongst the last few years worth of people to do the BFA, as from next year it will be changed into the BCI, "CI" being "Creative Industries." Time will tell what this actually means for fine arts at Newcastle University.
The show opening was a great evening with a good crowd showing up not just to see the work and sip a bit of free wine, but to listen to Angela Philp of Newcastle Fine Arts open the show and the band Katnip play for a couple of hours (thanks to Chrissie Kemp, who also had a show opening that night).
It's always great to see your work printed up the way you imagined it, not to mention having an excuse to print it in the first place! The appreciative crowd was very encouraging, and the people through the gallery in the weeks since have consistently remarked about the quality of all the work shown. Thanks to Matt, Chrissy, Michelle and Suannah Louise, and Karen, the other exhibitors, for also being part of this exhibition time, this being the first one I have been responsible for organising at Watt Space.
